This versatile tune was composed as a setting for a poem, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus." It has remained popular as a hymn, and has been borrowed for for singing alternate lyrics as in the films "O Lucky Man" and "Cool Hand Luke." I have a little fun taking it into ragtime.
